Spay and Neuter
Let's talk about spaying and neutering your pets.
Why should I? Well the important things to think about: would you like a rabbit without all the hormonal/ territorial tendencies? They are great pets but sometimes let's face it: They like to mark their territory and like to hump cage mates ( should you have one)! At 3 months of age, rabbit reach sexual maturity ( although you shouldn't breed any rabbit until 6 months, even longer for the larger breeds) and could end up with a liter of wayyyy too many in a months time.
Think of those pregnant at 3 months as teenage moms. Also, female male, female female, and male male could actually kill each other if not spayed/neutered. Here is more information from the House Rabbit Society about FAQ's about bonding spayed/neutered rabbits. It prevents unwanted pregnancies, cancers, and helps dramatically with liter box training.
As far as pricing for spaying and neutering goes, look for reputable vets ( Good to go to the rabbit rescues for recommendations because they have to use them frequently, thus the vet is used to working with rabbits. NOT MANY ARE ) and find out a price range that works for you. Sometimes it can be pricey, but that should be the only visit to the vet you make. Properly bred rabbits are sold healthy and will remain healthy if maintained with healthy diet of nail traimmings, greens, hay, and pellets.
Here is a low cost spay and neutering vet that is recommended by the Georgia House Rabbit Society: CLICK They offer their services at the cost of $90 for a male and $120 for a female. This is offer is good the first and third Wednesday every month. It may seem pricey, but usually the cost for a nearly decent (sometimes they aren't!) vet is around 200-300 dollars because it is normally the only visit you need to make to the vet in your rabbits life.Plus, because the Georgia House Rabbit Society works with these vets, they remain well practiced.
